Wednesday – ORAL HISTORY PROJECT  BEGINS !!

Questions and concerns discussed, explained, and answered.

Thursday and Friday  -  “About the Author” essay for Oral History Report written in class.  5 paragraph essay each student writes about themselves in 3rd person for the very last page of the Oral History Report.   Result  =  no less than the rough draft, hopefully the final draft.

Also, class celebrations in saying farewell to Ms. Sara Silverman, our student teacher from UCI.  Thank you Ms. Silverman for a terrific Fall Semester.  Good luck with your future.

SSR #1 is due this week.  600 pages of independent (Self – Selected Reading) = “A+”

Wordly Wise #3  -  we’ll work on this lesson throughout the week, with test and workbook due on Block Day.,

“All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury will be completed this week.

Continue reading “Boy of the Painted Cave”.  On Block Day this week we will have a mandala  (character study) art lesson centered on the wonderful characters in this nook.  Be thinking about Tao, Kala, Garth. Volt, Greybeard, and Ram.  We will finish this book and book study before Novemeber and then we will be viewing the film “Rudy”, truly a delightful film about a young man whose goal is to play football at the UNiversity of Notre Dame.

Great to have all of the 6th graders back from Catalina.  what a terrific week it was for everyone.  We’re back in the classroom now and ready to go with our weekly schedule.  Please be sure you are putting all of your assignments in your planner.  You and your parents/guardians use your planner to stay on top of all of your assignments in all of your classes.  Here we go:

Monday  -  Wordly Wise #2  -  Test, definition and 1 sentence and workbook due on Block Day

                          Writers Notebook  -  “Catalina-For Me”  write at least 5 paragraphs about your                              experiences at Outdoor Sccience School in Catalina.  Due on Block Day. 

Tuesday  -      Ms. Piv! will ready the story in Wordly Wise #2 and help you do the 15 questions

Wednesday  -  Grammar Lesson  -  Parts of Speech

BLOCK DAYS  -  Thursday and Friday  -  Library Computer Lab

                                  MY ACCESS  -  “Catalina…For Me” Final Draft due at end of period

                                   Wordly Wise #2  -  Test and Workbook due

Biggest news of this week is that Thursaday, September 24th is our Thurston Back to School Night.  I hope all 6th grade parents are planning to attend.  The evening begins at 6pm in the gymnasium.  A very special program honoring Thurston as a California Distinguished School will take place from 6pm – 6:30pm.  From 6:30pm until 8:30pm all parents will attend their childs’ class schedule to better know the goals and expectations of each Thurston teacher.  See you there !!!

Welcome to your 2nd week at Thurston and your 1st full 5 day week of school.  All is terrific here and I am so happy with each and every one of you as new 6th graders at Thurston.  Here is how Ms. Silverman and I see the week.  Please know that days can be changed around, but you will never be penalized or given extra work because of our flexibility.

MONDAY  -  Wordly Wise #1 – workbook completed with definition and sentence written for each of the 15 words  =  due on Block Day

TUESDAY  -  Grammar  -  nouns, pronouns, Proper Nouns  -  written classwork in Writers Notebook using Holt Handbook.

WEDNESDAY  -  Wordly Wise #1  -  “Lady Liberty” story and time to complete exercises

BLOCK DAYS:

THURSDAY  -     Periods 1, 3, 5                - Library Orientation, Wordly Wise Vocabulary TEST, Wordly Wise Workbook  Lesson #1 due, 

and  FRIDAY  -  Periods  2, 4, 6                  Packet “My Name - Myself ” Page 10 due

Hello to all of my 6th grade Language Arts students.  My classes are Periods 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6.  We will have lots to do this first week of school and tons of school information for you to learn about.  Please know that I am here to help you and get you started on the right foot for 6th grade and your following years at Thurston Middle School.  Ms. Sara Silverman is my student teacher from UCI and she will be here to help. guide and teach you, just like me.  Just a few pieces of homework for you  this first 4 days.1.  

1.     Class Supplies.  You have the list in your Planner.  Thank you for purchasing these items and having them in my classroom by Monday, September 14th.

2.     “Tell Me About Yourself – the Student Side and the Parent Side”  -  due before Friday.

3.      Large White Envelope from PTA and LBUSD.  Due asap.  Thank you.
